If You Can’t Be in L.A. for the Academy Awards…

You might want to consider the Academy of Friends Academy of Awards Night Gala taking place this Sunday at the San Francisco Design Center Galleria. Now in its 32nd year, money raised from tickets purchased benefit HIV/AIDS Services in the Bay Area.

The event is hugely popular. Guests watch the Academy Awards telecast while sampling gourmet foods and fine wines, provided by some of the area’s best restaurants, caterers and vintners. This year, after the broadcast, the cast of “MAMMA MIA” will be performing live.

Tickets are $250 in advance, $300 at the door.

Tulipmania Hits San Francisco

The temperature is supposed to be at or near 70 degrees in the City today and tomorrow. Might be nice to head down to PIER 39 for a little Tulipmania. Yes, PIER 39. It’s not just for tourists you know. Besides, it’s off-season, so it’s not overly crowded.

Tulipmania takes place now through Sunday. Thousands of tulips and other floral arrangements are on display on both levels of the pier. You can even go crazy and take a guided tulip tour. Visit their site for details.

You Should Be Skiing or Boarding Today

Seems a lot of people have gone to Tahoe this three-day weekend. If you didn’t make it up, or if you’re stuck in traffic on the way back to the City, here’s what it looked like at Heavenly. By the way, Heavenly has done an awesome job this year making snow when so little has fallen from the sky.

Presidents’ Day Comes Early to SF

Yesterday, President Barack Obama came to town. Before later sharing an exclusive dinner with guests paying nearly $36,000 each to attend, he picked up some dim sum to go in Chinatown.

The president rolled up his sleeves in the warm mid-60′s weather, shook hands and posed for pictures. Susan Walsh with the Associated Press made these photos.

Mardi Gras in San Francisco

Fat Tuesday is less than a week away. Granted, this isn’t New Orleans, but still, San Francisco knows how to throw a party. No better time to start than this weekend.

The Parlor at 2801 Leavenworth is hosting a Masquerade Mardi Gras event on Saturday night. Tickets are still available.

What else is going on? Where are you going to celebrate Mardi Gras this weekend? Or next Tuesday? And what, if anything, will you be giving up the next day for Lent?
